Ever washed your hair with a natural shampoo and wondered whether anything actually happened? All the foam of a damp lettuce leaf, no idea whether you are clean, and hair like a hay bale by the time it dries.
We thought there was room for one that did not make you choose between a gentle wash and a decent one.
Why natural shampoo got a bad name
Somewhere along the way, natural shampoo earned a reputation for being a bit of a wet blanket. Most of the time that comes down to what was taken out and what was not put back.
Conventional shampoo leans on SLS (sodium lauryl sulphate) and SLES to do the cleaning. They are cheap, they are effective, and they whip up an enormous pile of bubbles. Take them out and you have a choice: find something else that cleans properly, or ship a shampoo that does not.
Now, before anyone comes for us. SLS and SLES are not "bad" ingredients. They are effective cleansers and they work perfectly well for plenty of people. We simply wanted something a little gentler, formulated for dry or sensitive scalp types and for curly or colour-treated hair, without giving up that proper salon-shower feeling.
It took a lot of goes. Three years of testing, and a lot of rejected formulas, before we landed on the balance of fourteen ingredients in 'Respect My Roots' Natural Shampoo. Sulphates make lather easy. Take them out and you have to earn every bubble.
The secret? Three clever cleansers
Quick translation first, because the ingredient names are a mouthful. A surfactant is a molecule with a split personality: one end loves oil, the other end loves water. That is how it grabs the grime on your scalp and lets the water carry it away.
Our shampoo uses three of them, each doing a different job.
Sodium Lauroyl Methyl Isethionate (or SLMI, because life is short)
The workhorse. It is a sulphate-free cleanser built on curly-girl approved ingredients, and it costs several times what SLS does. It creates a rich, creamy lather while staying gentle on both your hair and your scalp, it cleans thoroughly, and it rinses away without leaving your mane feeling like it has just been through a car wash.
Coco Glucoside
Made from coconut and fruit sugars. This one is less about cleaning and more about texture. It shapes the foam, giving it that silky, cushiony feel rather than a thin, squeaky one.
Cocamidopropyl Betaine
The softener. Another coconut-derived ingredient, and it conditions your hair while the cleansing is happening, so everything rinses away without leaving a heavy residue or build-up behind.
A quick honesty note, because we promise to always tell you: none of these three grow on a tree. They start with coconut and plant sugars and are turned into cleansers using green chemistry. That is exactly how we like it, nature's raw material and science doing the useful bit. (The formula overall is 98.5% natural.)
Big bubbles vs a real lather
Here is the thing nobody tells you: bubble size and cleaning power have almost nothing to do with each other.
Those enormous airy bubbles you get from conventional shampoo are mostly just air, whipped up big by sulphates. What our three cleansers make is different. Think the microfoam on a flat white rather than a bubble bath: the bubbles are smaller and packed closer together, so the lather is denser, creamier and sits closer to your scalp.
It looks like less. It is not less. It is the just-right amount, which is exactly how our customers describe it.

Getting the best foam from your natural shampoo
Two things make the difference.
Use less than you think. The formula is concentrated rather than watered down, so a single pump is plenty for most people, and a teaspoon will handle thick, long, colour-treated hair. Resist the urge to over-pour. Your scalp, and your bottle's lifespan, will thank you.
Add a splash of water. Wet hands, wet hair, then work it through. That tiny bit of extra water is what turns a small amount of concentrate into a full head of lather.
