Healthy omega 3 chocolate “eggs” (+ last days of the Pig In Mud Mask special)

Happy Easter! The Christian celebration of Easter is upon us so get ready for a chocolate-a-thon.

A little bit of trivia for nerds like me: In pagan rituals that celebrated the spring equinox eggs symbolised rebirth and new life. The egg symbolism was adopted by the early Christians to celebrate the resurrection and new life.

Fast forward to the early 19th century and those crazy chocolate lovers the French and Germans started making the eggs out of chocolate and now they occupy entire supermarket aisles (and this marked the end of taking our 22 month old grocery shopping with us!).

That’s enough of the history lesson and onto the good stuff – how to rock your taste buds with a chocolate alternative this Easter.

Phoebe’s Super Healthy Omega Chocolate Eggs

Here is the recipe for what we call “Chocolate balls” at home but for this weekend we’ll call them “Chocolate eggs”. They aren’t really chocolate and you don’t even need to turn on the oven.


These delicious balls of goodness are

  • Super easy to make – no baking required
  • Delicious (I challenge anybody to stop at just one!)
  • Packed full of anti-oxidants and omega 3
  • Sugar free
  • Gluten free and
  • Virtually guilt free


This recipe makes about 15 “eggs”. Feel free to play with the combination of nuts – cashews work really well too! These are soooo good for you and even our little toddler loves making them.

  • 1 cup slivered almonds
  • 1 cup walnuts
  • 1/3 cup pepitas
  • 1/3 cup sunflower seeds
  • 1 cup dried dates, roughly chopped
  • 2/3 cup dried apricots, roughly chopped
  • 1/2 cup pitted prunes, roughly chopped
  • 2 tbsp raw cacao powder
  • 2 tbsp linseed meal (flaxseed)
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 1 big tbsp honey
  • 1 big tbsp coconut oil


  1. Lightly toast your nuts in a hot pan
  2. Put nuts into the food processor and whazz it up (on high) till the nuts are finely chopped
  3. Add dates, apricots and prunes (all roughly chopped), cocoa, linseed meal, cinnamon, honey and coconut oil to the food processor
  4. Process on low for about 2min until everything is well mixed and it all starts clumping together
  5. With wet hands make tablespoon-sized (or golf-ball sized) balls and roll them in coconut (the wetness helps the coconut stick better)
  6. Refrigerate for at least 2 hrs
  7. Eat them yum yum … so good with coffee! (and store in the fridge in an airtight container)
