As you age, there are many delightful surprises that await you in your golden years. Wisdom, for one. Lovely laughter lines. Plenty of experiences to be had. And a few decades of glorious memories - some good, some iffy, but all memorable nonetheless.
As the years pass, you might also like to evolve your skincare regime. Not to hide the tell-tale signs of ageing; but so that you can put your best face forward when you’re doing the things you love in life.
To keep you glowing, here are a few fun steps to keep wise skin in check.
If you’re still using the same alcohol-based cleanser you were using in your 20s, it’s time to make a switch. Gentler ingredients will help nourish the skin without causing damage.
Cleansing oils work particularly well for mature skin, as they nourish and hydrate while also getting rid of impurities. Check out our best selling Cloud 9 Deep Cleansing Balm, which blends natural, botanical oils with Shea Butter to gently cleanse the skin without compromising its moisture barrier.
If you’re after an oil-based cleanser that’s more liquid than balm, our 3 Cheers Cleansing Oil is an absolute beauty, magically turning milky when it emulsifies with water to wash away impurities without stripping your skin of its natural oils.
Daily cleansing also preps your skin for any other treatments or products you want to apply to keep your complexion in tip-top condition.
Pro-ageing tip: A healthy diet that’s free from over-processed foods can do wonders for your skin and general health. Good nutrition can also help address some of the symptoms linked to menopause and reduce stress.
Get your glow on
Gloriously glowing skin can help you feel super confident at any age! Plus, radiant skin requires less make-up, amiright?
A fantastic way to counteract the dulling and drying effects of menopause or ageing is to include a natural face oil in your skincare arsenal. These tend to be packed with skin-nourishing nutrients to help boost your skin’s health while you sleep.
Our Good Vibes Brightening Facial Oil is powered by Omegas 3, 6, 7 and 9, as well as Zinc and Vitamin C. This power blend supports the skin and gives way to an optimal glow.
For dryer skin types, try our Laugh Out Loud Anti-Stress Facial Oil. This little gem delivers anti-oxidants and a whole host of pro-ageing nutrients to help you reduce the appearance of redness, repair your skin barrier, and get your healthy, smooth complexion back.
Another wonderful way to treat and brighten your skin is with a water-based serum. The FG Serum 01 - Glow with Vitamin C and Peptides helps to smooth your skin and reduce the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, pigmentation and uneven skin tone.
Pro-ageing tip: 30 minutes of movement a day can reduce toxins in the body, as well as improve blood circulation and oxygenation for a healthy radiance. Walking, hula hooping, trampoline jumping, salsa dancing, quidditch… whatever you choose to do, have fun with it!
Feel happy with hydration
Moisture is incredibly important for mature skin. We know that as skin ages it produces less hyaluronic acid, and so the skin becomes drier.
Regularly slathering your skin with moisturiser helps to keep it hydrated and prevents it from becoming flaky or itchy.
Good hydration also supports your skin’s barrier function (this is like your skin’s own personal bodyguard), which helps keep irritants at bay.
To keep your skin’s moisture levels up, look for a skincare cream that contains natural emollient ingredients, like Shea Butter and Jojoba Oil. (Funnily enough, our Over the Moon Rich Repair Cream is packed with these skin-loving emollients!)
Dryer skin types will love soaking up our Sweet Dreams Ultra Rich Beauty Cream which is incredibly luscious and high in active pro-ageing ingredients to help visibly reduce the appearance of fine lines, redness, age spots and visible pores.
To supercharge your skin’s hydration, try applying our Raindrops Hydrating Tonicbefore moisturising. Think of it as a sports drink (minus the sugars) for your skin! It not only hydrates and energises the skin, but it also contains Organic Pomegranate and Kakadu Plum to support the production of collagen and elastin; great for smooth, plump skin.
Pro-ageing tip:Drinking plenty of water helps flush out toxins to keep skin healthy. It also boosts your energy levels, and keeps your body in a state of balance.
Sure, there’s no denying mature skin can use an extra helping hand to keep it looking its best. And there’s no shame in calling in the big guns from time to time.
You might need an added boost of antioxidants. Or perhaps a few more active ingredients to give a dose of vitality. If you’re not exfoliating, then this could be the missing step as an exfoliator will help clear away dead skin cells so your other products can be more effective.
Enzyme exfoliants are a fantastic option for mature skin. Unlike chemical peels and physical exfoliants, which can be harsh (with the exception of the Spoonful of Sugar Exfoliating Scrub, of course!), enzyme exfoliants are gentle, yet highly effective.
Enzyme exfoliators use natural enzymes to break down the ‘glue’ that holds dead skin cells onto the skin. Sounds a bit yuck, but it’s this build-up of dead cells that can leave skin looking dull and less than fabulous.
Keep an enzyme exfoliant like the ‘This Is Me’ Enzyme Exfoliating Mask as your secret weapon and bring it out when your skin needs a little pick-me-up.
Pro-ageing tip:Why not add a dose of mindfulness into your daily glowing skin regime? You can easily practice a breathing exercise as you cleanse, exfoliate and moisturise.
Protection from the elements
Did you know that exposure to UV rays is one of the biggest causes of premature ageing? This is because sun damage causes dryness, wrinkles and pigmentation.
Sun protection is a must at any age, and not just in summer. Even in winter, when the sky is grey, UV light can sneakily damage your skin.
Of course, the trick is to choose a sunscreen you like the feel of (ideally a broad-spectrum), otherwise you’ll loathe slathering it onto your mug. Just quietly, we’re working on a new moisturiser + SPF formula at the moment, and hopefully it will be launching in early 2022!
Get into the habit of wearing your sunscreen daily, on top of your regular moisturiser. And don’t forget to apply it to your neck and chest—not just your face.
Remember, it’s never too late (or too early) to take care of your skin, no matter your age. And as always, don’t forget to smile and laugh – a happy, kind heart glows not just on the inside, but the outside too!
